Weekly Writing Prompt for Sept. 12 2011

Inspired by the recent deluge of mentions in paper about crime in and around the city of Hastings, MN.

Writing Prompt: The city of Hastings, MN is experiencing a rash of recent crimes.  They range from attempted abductions, to the most recent finding of 600 “wild” marijuana plants growing on a hillside in town.  Write a short fiction piece (Let’s shoot for a minimum of 350 words) explaining the SUPERNATURAL cause behind the crime increase.  Think witches, warlocks, werewolves, demons, and, yes, even vampires.

Why selected: To help break us out of our molds a bit and write something that we wouldn’t normally write.

Weekly Writing Prompt for Sept. 4 2011

This week’s writing prompt is from  podcast entitled “Writing Excuses.”  It was featured a few episodes ago, but seemed to be a good one to start us out on.

Writing Prompt: Go someplace, use all five of your senses, and for thirty minutes write about the place you’re in. Not the people though. Just the place.

Origin: Writing Excuses 6.11: Making Your Descriptions Do More Than One Thing

Why selected: This writing prompt seems to be a great exercise in world building/scene descriptions.  Hopefully this will help is better describe the world our characters live in.
